METHODS OF INSPECTION

DSEAR Inspections – 3 Levels of Examination - Under BS EN 60079-17 (for electrical installations in hazardous areas), inspections fall into three levels:

Visual Inspection

A non-intrusive check that can be carried out without tools or touching equipment looking for signs of damage, corrosion, incorrect equipment, or unauthorised modifications.

Close Inspection

Requires physical access and may involve the use of basic tools. This level includes checking cable gland tightness, seals, earthing continuity, labelling, and the condition of enclosures.

Detailed Inspection

The most thorough level, typically requiring power isolation and opening of enclosures. It involves internal examination of components, wiring, and termination quality to identify hidden defects.

REPORTING EXAMPLES

Below are some example reports to give a flavour of what can be included in the report and the format of these.

FREQUENCY & APPROACH

Inspections are typically conducted on an annual rolling basis, guided by a site-specific risk assessment.

At Meson, we typically implement a 3-year rotational inspection cycle:

Each depot receives a mix of Visual, Close, and Detailed inspections annually.

Over the three-year cycle, every inspection type is completed across every area of the site ensuring full coverage while minimising disruption.
