MTFI Fuel Infrastructure
Meson’s MTFI upgrade enhances Ministry of Defence fuel infrastructure with compliance | Meson Electrical Services
STEP ONE
What Was the Brief?
Meson Electrical Services was appointed to provide the full electrical scope for the upgrade of a long-serving Mechanical Transport Fuelling Installation (MTFI) that had been in operation for over 20 years.
The project required safe disconnection and removal of redundant systems, provision of new temporary supplies, and installation of a complete electrical infrastructure to support the new above-ground fuel storage, dispensing, and control systems.
Our role was to deliver a future-ready electrical installation that would integrate seamlessly with the new mechanical infrastructure, comply with ATEX and BS 7671 standards, and ensure the fuelling system could operate safely, reliably, and efficiently for decades to come.
STEP TWO
What Did Meson Do?
We approached the MTFI Fuel Infrastructure Upgrade with a clear focus on safety, compliance, and technical precision, working hand-in-hand with the civils contractor and specialist suppliers. Key works included:
Disconnections & Temporary Supplies – Safe isolation and removal of redundant cabling and equipment, plus provision of temporary electrical supplies to maintain site facilities during the works.
New Electrical Infrastructure – Installation of a 200m sub-main cable, Schneider switchgear and TP&N distribution boards with full protection, metering, and surge suppression.
Fuel System & Ancillary Wiring – Cabling, glanding, and connection of Transflo equipment, power supplies to tank gauges, bund/leak detection, and communications back to the main building.
Safety & Compliance Systems – New TT earthing system, lightning protection supervision, ATEX-rated fireman’s switch and emergency stops, and a single-zone fire alarm system with smoke detection.
Cabin & External Services – Complete lighting, power, and heating for the POL cabin, plus external site lighting with Abacus columns, Thorlux fittings, and Smartscan Scene Selector controls.
Testing & Commissioning – Full electrical testing, certification, and issue of Hazardous Area Detailed Inspection Certificates.
STEP THREE
What Was the Result?
The completed installation delivered a fully compliant, regulation-ready fuelling system underpinned by a safe, modern electrical infrastructure.
The new distribution, protection, and cabling systems ensure resilience and future expandability.
ATEX-rated fire and emergency controls give the client enhanced safety assurance.
Integrated external lighting and cabin services improve usability and site safety.
The project was delivered within programme, with close coordination ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
By combining hazardous area expertise with strong project management, Meson Electrical Services provided a high-quality electrical installation that will support reliable fuelling operations for years to come.
TESTIMONIAL
“I only have positive feedback to add regarding the recently completed installation. The overall quality of the workmanship is excellent, and it’s clear that a high level of professionalism was applied throughout the project. Communication between our teams has also been consistently strong, which has made coordination smooth and efficient from start to finish.
Any issues that arose on site were dealt with promptly and professionally. Where variations from the original design intent were required, the experience and expertise of your electrical team were evident. The solutions proposed not only addressed the issues effectively but also represented genuine improvements on the original design.
