The Meson Inspect approach to inspection excellence
For businesses operating in hazardous or fuel‑storage environments, testing, inspection, and repair of electrical systems is not optional - it’s essential. DSEAR Risk Assessments especially are one of the most important ways duty holders can actively protect employees, members of the public, and property from the risk of fires or explosions. Neglecting a rigorous inspection schedule could result in:
Safety risks and liability
Uninspected or poorly maintained electrical equipment in hazardous areas can lead to catastrophic failures: sparks, faults, short‑circuits, all of which can ignite vapours or dust, causing fires or explosions.Regulatory fines
Regulations like DSEAR insist on maintaining standards, inspecting installations, reporting defects, and remediating them. Failure to comply can result in fines, shutdowns, or insurance claims being refused.Operational disruption
A failure in a hazardous area can force you to shut down part or all of your operations, leading to downtime, lost production, lost revenue, and costly emergency repairs.Reputational damage
Incidents linked to safety lapses get media attention. Customers, partners, insurers expect due diligence. Regular, documented inspection and repair help you demonstrate you take safety seriously.
One barrier we have noticed that is preventing businesses from committing to assessments is the worry about the costs involved in closing entire sites while inspections are carried out. A lot of inspection companies are rigid and refuse to adapt to meet the needs of individual sites, often leading to lost revenue that is difficult to recover.
This is where Meson Inspect is different, and why we focus on a collaborative approach to making sure our client’s sites are fully compliant while also remaining as operational as possible.

Why choose the Meson Inspect approach
Typically conducted on an annual rolling basis, inspections are guided by a site-specific risk assessment. In an ideal scenario, the risk assessment should be reviewed at least every three years, which is why at Meson we can work with your business to provide a three-year rotational inspection cycle.
What this means is that each depot we inspect will receive a mix of Visual, Close, and Detailed inspections annually. This mixed approach means every inspection type is completed across every area over the three-year cycle, minimising disruption.
A Visual Inspection is a quick, low-impact inspection that doesn't require tools or isolation of the equipment. Meanwhile, a Close Inspection goes into slightly more detail, using tools and access equipment to identify defects without needing to open an enclosure or shut down the equipment.
Finally, as the most thorough level, a Detailed Inspection will involve a comprehensive examination of the workplace to classify hazardous areas, identify dangerous substances, evaluate ignition sources, and review all control measures and emergency procedures.
Our initial assessment will see us separate each depot into areas to assess, including storage, handling procedures, potential ignition sources, ventilation and control measures. Next, we will create an annual schedule that will see, for example, the first area receives a Visual inspection in year one, a Close inspection in year two and a Detailed inspection in year three. Meanwhile, the second area will receive its Detailed inspection in year one, a Visual inspection in year two and a Close inspection in year three, and so on.
| Year one | Year two | Year three | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Area one | Visual inspection | Close inspection | Detailed inspection |
| Area two | Close inspection | Detailed inspection | Visual inspection |
| Area three | Detailed inspection | Visual inspection | Close inspection |
By following this phased three-year roadmap we don’t require our customers to completely shut down their sites, which often isn’t practical. Instead, we work together to ensure they can continue to operate throughout the inspections.
