APEA Live 2025 – A Standout Year for Knowledge, Collaboration & Innovation

This year, our very own Tim Hughes was shortlisted for the Outstanding Individual Award — a testament to the quiet, consistent, and high-integrity contribution he has made to transforming fuel depot compliance nationwide.

Although Tim did not take home the award, the nomination alone recognises the scale of his impact across more than thirty operational depots and reflects the values at the heart of Meson: Compliance with Commercial Understanding.

APEA Live once again proved why it is the UK’s leading event for the petroleum, fuel infrastructure, and hazardous-area community.

Across the exhibition floor and the technical sessions, the focus was clear: safety, resilience, digital enablement, and cost-effective compliance.

  1. Our team connected with suppliers, ATEX specialists, consultants, and operators from across the sector. Key themes this year included:

    • Smart monitoring and data-driven maintenance for hazardous-area assets

    • Increasing importance of risk-based inspections over blanket upgrades

    • Practical approaches to managing multisite DSEAR compliance

    • Rising expectations for documentation integrity and audit readiness

    • Supply chain challenges and opportunities within the decarbonisation transition

For Meson, the event was an opportunity to showcase our approach to fuel depot compliance, inspection, and remedial work and to understand firsthand where the industry is heading.

The highlight of the day was, without question, seeing Tim represented among the UK’s top individuals in the sector.

Spotlight on Tim Hughes – Quietly Raising the Bar for Fuel Depot Compliance Nationwide

Tim’s nomination for Outstanding Individual of the Year reflects the transformation he has delivered across one of the UK’s largest fuel depot networks.

Over the last three years, Tim has led the operational delivery of a national Fuels Inspection, Testing & Repairs contract, covering more than thirty depots.
His work has turned a complex, multi-site compliance challenge into a structured, scalable, safety-first model that provides clarity, control, and value for our client.

Why Tim Was Nominated

Leadership & Coordination
Tim orchestrates inspections, RAMS, scheduling, certification workflows, and client communication with calm, methodical precision. His approach has kept the programme running smoothly across the UK.

Engineering Integrity Delivered Operationally
While not a designer himself, Tim ensures engineering intent is translated into real-world delivery depot by depot, inspection by inspection.

A Risk-Based Compliance Model
Tim helped operationalise a structured three-year inspection programme aligned with BS EN 60079-17, covering visual, close, and detailed inspections.

This approach has replaced unnecessary, cost-intensive blanket upgrades with a smarter, risk-prioritised strategy.

Measurable Outcomes
The network is now compliant, with a clear roadmap for the remaining upgrades on sites.
The programme has delivered stronger documentation, reduced operational disruption, and enhanced long-term maintainability.

While Tim didn’t secure the final award this year, his nomination placed him among the sector’s leading professionals and the impact of his work continues to raise the bar nationally.

The presentation summarising Tim’s contribution showcased:

  • A three-year, rotating inspection model covering visual, close, and detailed inspections

  • Evidence-led reporting with photographic records and risk-based scoring

  • Smart deployment of ATEX Ex-rated equipment

  • Environmental and cost benefits achieved by avoiding unnecessary strip-outs

  • Robust planning, RAMS, certification and documentation processes

  • A national rollout delivered with consistency, quality, and commercial awareness

Though the award went elsewhere, the nomination itself was a proud moment for both Tim and Meson Electrical.
It reflects the trust our clients place in our methodology and the dedication our team brings to every project whether it’s a single depot or a nationwide programme.
